Kansas City, MO – On July 1st, MetroAir Virtual Airlines and Cirrus Air held a joint press conference at Cirrus’ headquarters in Chicago.

The boards of both airlines — which operate more than 600 daily flights combined — approved the acquisition of Cirrus by MetroAir for an undisclosed figure in closed door meetings Wednesday afternoon. The Cirrus brand will be dissolved but the route network will be absorbed into MetroAir’s system. The merger combines MetroAir’s strengths on the coast lines with Cirrus’ routes originating in Chicago and Jacksonville.

When asked why Cirrus was agreeing to an acquisition Cirrus CEO, Jeremy Ballsmith, said “In an unfortunate situation, I feel that Metro is the best possible guardian of the Cirrus Air legacy. Over the past two years many including myself have worked hard to operate Cirrus in a realistic and professional manner. Through our merge I look forward to the realism Metro will bring to Cirrus pilots, and trust Metro Air’s decisions when it comes time to merge the airline into one.”

Of the combined routes, only one is shared between both airlines: Chicago Midway to Detroit. Kim Gesch, MetroAir’s Chief Operating Officer explained that MetroAir planned to integrate Cirrus’ full schedule and share booking, bidding and ticketing systems within three months. Gesch also announced that the Cirrus hubs at Chicago Midway and Jacksonville would be scaled down in the coming months.

“Cirrus Air has been on the radar of the MetroAir board for some time. We have been watching Cirrus shape itself under Mr. Ballsmith’s leadership and has taken on very similar business objectives, goals and operating structure as MetroAir in recent months.”, said MetroAir CEO Matt Calsada. He continued to say that the opportunity to fold Cirrus Air into MetroAir presented itself and was an excellent opportunity that MetroAir could not pass on. With last weeks announcement of acquiring 16 new A330s and the acquisition of Cirrus Air, MetroAir has launched itself in a prime position as a domestic and international carrier that can no longer be ignored by major US Carriers.

MetroAir Virtual has published a guide to the acquisition and answered a few of the common questions that will come up from staff and pilots of both airlines at http://www.metroairvirtual.com/merger/.

A new virtual airline has taken to the skies: Platinum Airways. The airline offers its VP’s a very virtual environment that is rich in content and low on rules. Operating out of four hubs, Platinum Airways flies a wide range of jet aircraft in its own livery. Platinum Airways is a non-VATSIM, KISS airline and is aimed at FS9 and FSX users.

Platinum Airways was established by a group of VP’s in 2009 with one central aim: to ensure that flying remains fun. Platinum Airways presents itself as a KISS airline, Keeping It Straight and Simple. Operating out of KDFW (Dallas Fort Worth), CYVR (Vancouver), Brussels (EBBR) and Perth (YPPH), it offers more than 1,000 flights (many of them multiple legs) that can be flown as and when it suits the VP best. VP’s can switch between hubs as they please, without having to request authorization. Platinum Airways feels strongly that a virtual airline should remain a hobby and should have as few do’s and don’ts as possible. As it trusts its pilots are interested in having a great time by flying, Platinum Airways doesn’t require them to fly missions through VATSIM or any other external network.

Central to the new virtual airline is its powerful website, www.platinumairways.org. There is a reason for having selected a .org domain name, and not a .com. Platinum Airways doesn’t believe that virtual shares, aircraft purchase financing and the like will increase the fun factor in a virtual airline.

Pilot reports and other admin are kept to a minimum, as its management, too, would like to fly as often as possible. VP’s are not required to join a flight roster. New members (minimum age: 18) are expected to complete their first mission within two weeks. Thereafter, members are expected to complete one mission per month. Accumulated proven hours from other airlines are fully honoured and added to your records after your first PIREP has been processed. Membership is free. Flights are not based on real life schedules, but aim at taking VP’s to places which they may never have visited before. Most airports have ILS, but include the odd difficult approach here and there – that only adds to the fun.

To add to the fun factor, Platinum Airways offers a Destination of the Week. The DOTW may be linked to actuality. Or it may be a special airport, like the one closest to the Equator. VP’s are encouraged to suggest new DOTW’s, special charter flights or any other new content that would strengthen the airline.

For more information, please contact Al Nel at al.nel@platinumairways.org.

The IPS team is pleased to announce the next generation logging software: the Integrated Pirep System for Virtual Airlines.

Most virtual airlines use logging software like FSAcars. This brings two major disadvantages: those software programs can crash, which results in losses of flightlogs, and they are mostly not compatible with other operating systems than Windows. The IPS solves these two big problems, because it is not based on a flight logging client.

The Integrated Pirep System (or IPS) is a free PHP-based flight logger which runs on the web server of a Virtual Airline. Because of that, no pilot client is required. The IPS gets it data from IVAO, VATSIM or both. It can automatically detect flights or use a flight booking system to log flights.

And to help you integrate the IPS into your VA website, they offer affordable integration services, available at their website:

Embraer said in a statement that the deal comprises six Embraer 170s and five 190s on firm order, plus options for three more 190s.

The first 76-seat 170 is due for delivery in the later half of the 2010 summer. Deliveries of the larger, 98-seat 190s will start later in the fall, says Embraer.

SnapJet had been evaluating replacements for some time for its A319s that are operated on shorter low density routes. The new Embraer aircraft will be operated out of San Jose and Las Vegas.

As part of the agreement SnapJet has also signed a support agreement covering inventory control for parts for the aircraft over the next decade.

The issue has been discussed over the last two weeks and numerous suggestions have been made in order to keep VVA flying. Unfortunately, after much deliberation, management concluded that it would be best to temporarily close down until all VVA staff members have more time to dedicate.

Flight Operations will cease on May 29, 2010.

All Beechcraft aircraft will be parked and secured at the Charlotte, NC Crew Base. All Embraer aircraft will be parked and secured at the Boston, MA Crew Base. All Boeing and McDonnell Douglas aircraft will be parked and secured at the Atlanta, GA Crew Base. All aircraft will be kept hangared and maintained on each field until the re-opening.

Noone is at fault for this temporary closing and the VVA team hopes that this decision will help to prolong the airlines’ time in the virtual skies.

If you are interested and would like to be notified of the re-opening, please contact either mcrane@flyvva.org or ajevdic@flyvva.org with your name and a valid email address.
