A little more than 10 years ago on a cold Michigan morning, founder Mark McCoy had a crazy idea to build a new virtual airline that was focused on realism. The plan was to start the airline off like a new real world airline with a very limited fleet (and  cash balance).  The airline officially started with 6 Boeing 737-200ADVs and 3 Bombardier Dash 8-Q200s. ”Today is just the beginning” said McCoy on that very first day; his words have never rang so true.

For those of you who like numbers, in the 10 years we’ve had some impressive stats. Keep in mind that we did lose some data at one point so the numbers for all are really a little higher. In the 10 years, we’ve had:

• 90,591 bids
• 69,276 pireps
• 49,699 acars flights with 8,642,628 position reports
• 7574 unique flights
• 111,718 forum posts

…and don’t forget all of the nose cones!

It’s been a great 10 years at MetroAir. We’re sticking to the original motto of “realistic. innovative. professional.” We’re planning a full year of celebratory fun, starting with the re-activation of the old 732 flights.

N711MT has been in storage at Ontario Int’l Airport since it’s retirement in March of 2008. Over the past few months, MetroAir mechanics have been working to get it back in flying order. In celebration of our 10th anniversary, the B732 will be making a grand tour of some of historically notable MetroAir destinations. Tour flights will be routed DTW-PDX-ONT-LAX-MCI-AUS-FLL-BWI-ORD-DTW, along with a ferry flight between Ontario and Detroit.

This past weekend Royal Dutch Virtual celebrated the one year anniversary of its opening. It has also announced its new partnership with KLM to become the one and only Official KLM Virtual Airline.

Royal Dutch Virtual has over 400 pilots flying hundreds of flights every week to destinations around the world. Today, there are several hundred virtual airlines around today.   Many are very successful and there are others that are struggling. but we all share a great hobby.   It does take a lot of hard work and dedication to make a VA work.  Here at Eastern, we have shown that we have that dedication.  We continue to work hard to keep pilots flying.

Eastern Airlines Virtual is always looking for people that have the same dedication.  Whether you are veteran or a new pilot, we accept everyone who is willing to fly.  Our management staff is very  knowledgeable  and willing to help new pilots.  We never have and strict restrictions, ranks or anything to keep pilots from flying our routes.  Only thing we ask is that you fly regularly.  If you enjoy the hobby as much as we do, this shouldn’t be an issue.

Salt Lake City, Utah, – Atlantic Skies, the oldest continuously operational virtual airline on the internet, will celebrate its 20^th anniversary on January 4^th, 2013. It was on that date in 1993 that Andrew Phillips flew the first route for something he called “Atlantic Skies Airlines”.

Atlantic Skies pushed the Virtual Airline envelope by introducing the first automated web-based pilot reporting system (AAMS – 1999).

This was followed by the first automated, desktop ACARS system (AACARS – 2002) that integrated with Flight Simulator using FSUIPC to report directly to the corporate server.

For over two decades this virtual airline has evolved and forced changes in the industry, and has continued to fly with extraordinary success.

Though many have come and gone, this is one VA that will be around for another twenty years – if past history has anything to do with it.
