Canadian Xpress September Fly-In – Happy 19th MS Flight Simulator 95

In the fall of 1996, Microsoft released Flight Simulator for Windows 95 (FS6), the first windows based version of Microsoft Flight Simulator. Although this was more or less just a port from the DOS version (FS5.1) released just a year earlier, it did feature vastly improved frame-rates, better haze as well as additional aircraft, including the Extra 300 aerobatic aircraft. It also featured more 3-D detailing. This could be noticed in many places such as Manhattan and Meigs Field. This version was the first to also include major airports outside the US and Europe, which put Canadian airports (11 of them) in the simulator for the first time.

This month we are going to pay tribute to that lost flight simulator, which helped get it all started some 19 years ago. Departing from Toronto (CYYZ), it would be fitting to visit the default airport of Flight Simulator for Windows 95 Meigs Field (KCGX). However sadly due to political reasons at the time using the tragic events of September 11, 2001 to back up his actions, on the night of Sunday March 30, 2003, Mayor Daley ordered city crews to destroy the runway in the middle of the night, bulldozing large X-shaped gouges into the runway surface.

So unable to stop at Meigs Field, Canadian Xpress^® would like to invite all pilots to join us on Saturday, September 26^th at 10h00edt (14h00z) and 21h00edt (Sunday 01h00z) for our September 2015 fly-in where we will fly from Toronto (CYYZ) to another Chicago area airport and one of the busiest in the world Chicago O’Hare (KORD) and celebrate the 19th anniversary of Flight Simulator for Windows 95.

Canadian Xpress August Fly-In – 6th Anniversary

Back in early 2009 a close group friends and pilots found themselves without a virtual airline to call home. They could have just went and found a new one, but instead they decided to stick together and build a new virtual airline from the ground up and on September 4^th, 2009 Canadian Xpress officially opened.

Canadian Xpress would like to invite all pilots & virtual airlines to join us on Saturday, August 29^th at 10h00edt (14h00z) and 21h00edt (Sunday 01h00z) for our August 2015 fly-in and help us celebrate our 6th anniversary where we fly from our training base in Moncton (CYQM) to our operational headquarters in Montreal (CYUL).

Canadian Xpress July Fly-In – Mighty Planes – B737-200

Anyone who is a fan of all things that fly, has probably watched The Discovery’s Channels series called Mighty Planes. The 5^th episode of their second season which aired in the middle of June was on the Boeing 737-200 operated by Nolinor Aviation based out of Montreal Mirabel airport.

The show covered the operation of the 737-200 as it traveled from Mirabel to Val-D’Or, here it loaded up cargo for the giant mining company Agnico Eagle for transport to their Meadowbank mine in Nunavut.

For this month’s fly-in we wanted to recreate that route, however its 3+ hour flight that puts it outside our target flight time for these events. Furthermore, Meadowbank is a private airport for the mine, it’s not modeled within the FS world.

Nolinor being a charter airline does operate all over the North so Canadian Xpress would like to invite all pilots & virtual airlines to join us on Saturday, July 25^th at 10h00edt (14h00z) and 21h00edt (Sunday 01h00z) for our July 2015 fly-in where we will fly their Val-D’Or (CYVO) to Kuujjuaq (CYVP) route.

Canadian Xpress June Fly-In – FlightSimCon

FlightSimCon is the annual flight simulator show and convention for all of us simmers. This year it’s being held at the New England Air Museum at Bradley Airport just outside of Hartford CT in Windsor Locks.

All the big manufactures will be there at this year’s event including Aerosoft to Saitek to name a few.

This month’s fly-in is going to take place during the event in to Bradley airport. VATSIM and Boston Virtual ATC will have exhibits at FlightSimCon, so there is a good chance our fly-in will be shown live at the event.

To add to the realism for this event. The departure airport for this fly-in is from your home airport as you select when connecting to VATSIM. With a goal of arriving as a group at Bradley Airport. Those whose home airport is too far away to use for departure you can start anywhere you like or join in with someone else.

Canadian Xpress January Fly-In – The Tropics

Last month, we enjoyed a nice -45°c landing in Russia, so this month we are going to warm things up a bit.

Starting in the city of brotherly love in Philadelphia and home of the Liberty Bell, we are getting away from the cold of winter into the warmth and tropical air of Caribbean Sea to Nassau in the Bahamas where the weather is a steady +27°c all winter long, so don’t forget your sunscreen.

Canadian Xpress December Fly-In – Cold!

For some places in the world the weather is warming up and spring is slowly starting to break free of winter’s grasp, if you live in the southern hemisphere. For those of us in the northern hemisphere winter is on its way. Already here in some places like Buffalo NY, it has seen 6+ feet of snow over a period of 3 days.

This month, we are flying to the coldest airport in the world. Yakutsk Airport in Russia will allow you to experience what could be one of the chilliest travel hubs on the planet as the city is regarded as the coldest in the world. With the average temperature in January standing at around -39C (-38F). What makes this airport even stranger with its cold temperatures, is the airport isn’t high up in the mountains. It sits at only 275 feet above sea level.

Canadian Xpress October Fly-In – Aurora Borealis

An aurora is a natural light display in the sky (from the Latin word aurora, “sunrise” or the Roman goddess of dawn), especially in the high latitude like Canada’s Arctic regions, caused by the collision of solar wind and magnetosphere charged particles with the high altitude atmosphere. The charged particles and solar wind are directed into the atmosphere by the Earth’s magnetosphere. A geomagnetic storm expands the aurora zone to lower latitudes.

Canadian Xpress would like to invite all pilots & virtual airlines to join us on Saturday, October 18^th at 10h00edt (14h00z) and 20h00edt (24h00z) for our October 2014 fly-in where we will travel from Vancouver (CYVR) and head north on an 1h45 minute charter flight to Yellowknife (CYZF) with people heading to Aurora Village to spend a night sleeping under the stars, taking in the spectacle of Canada’s Aurora Borealis. From Yellowknife our passengers will travel on to the Aurora Village for an evening they will never forget.

Canadian Xpress September Fly-In – Equipment Delivery

In August, 1949, Joey Smallwood, Premier of Newfoundland, had the opportunity to see Churchill Falls for the first time and it became his obsession to develop the hydroelectric potential of the falls. After years of planning, the project was officially started on July 17, 1967. The machine hall of the power facility at Churchill Falls was hollowed out of solid rock, close to 1,000 ft (300 m) underground. Its final proportions are huge: in height it equals a 15-storey building, its length is three times that of a Canadian football field. When completed, it housed 11 generating units, with a combined capacity of 5,428 MW (7,279,000 hp). Water is contained by a reservoir created not by a single large dam, but by a series of 88 dikes that have a total length of 64 km (40 mi). At the time, the project was the largest civil engineering project ever undertaken in North America.

This month we are adding a bit of a twist as the event is not only a fly-in, it’s got a challenge feeling as well. The power station is getting ready for fall maintenance work now that the hot summer weather has passed and electricity demand is at its lowest point of the year. So for this month’s fly-in will be using cargo aircraft to ship supplies from Quebec City.

Due to the size of the airport at Churchill Falls, the C130 or HS748 are recommended, but you can fly any cargo aircraft that is smaller than the C-130. Since these aircraft are limited on their navigational equipment, it’s going to be a test of your navigation skills as well.

Canadian Xpress 5th Anniversary Fly-In

Canadian Xpress was established on April 1^st, 2009 and was officially launched on September 4^th, 2009.

As part of the ongoing celebrations leading up to the 4^th of September, we will be running our August Fly-In at 2 different times of the day so that all pilots that are located world-wide can celebrate this historic event.

VATCAN Presents Moncton Monday – Weekly Fly-In

Moncton Monday is VATCAN’s longest running weekly event, providing full-coverage ATC every Monday night, beginning at 2200z, encompassing over six terminal controlled airports, and dozens of smaller fields.

Each Monday, airports including Halifax (CYHZ), Moncton (CYQM), St. John’s (CYYT), and Gander (CYQX), will be staffed from top to bottom, including Moncton Centre, in a fun and relaxed Monday night.

All kinds of traffic, whether VFR or IFR, airplane or helicopter, are welcome and pilots of all skill levels are invited.
