The bright orange-painted Spirit of Columbus – one of the two Airbus A319s that Skybus is operating on its initial routes – will be pushed back from the gate at Port Columbus on schedule at 9:00 Tuesday morning bound for Richmond ,Va .

All Skybus flights will board from the ground, using a ramp to the front door and stairs at the back door. The method is quicker and more cost-effective than using a ramp as most major airlines do at Port Columbus.

The plane holds 153 passengers. Among those taking the maiden voyage were Skybus CEO Justin Caughenbaugh, CFO Joe Poston, President Jason Fausnaugh and Vice President Michael Herron. They were joined by dozens of jubilant vacationers such as Vicki and Dean of Canal Winchester, who said Skybus’ low fares made possible a long-standing wish to visit the Richmond Area.

“I’ve always wanted to go. I’ve heard it’s a beautiful state, and people don’t want to come back,” said Vicki.

Although the Simses weren’t able to get the lowest fares of $10 each way before taxes and fees, said the $105 they paid was still much less than what it would have cost prior to the launch of Skybus.

Sitting on the tarmac awaiting an expected 5 p.m. takeoff to Kansas City was Skybus’ second plane, which features a giant ad for Nationwide on its fuselage. Skybus is seeking paid advertising on the exterior and interior of its jets as a way of raising more revenue.

Skybus is largely modeled after Irish airline Ryanair, which has become Europe’s biggest passenger airline by keeping ticket prices very low and charging for extras such as snacks, checked bags and priority boarding. Checked bags on Skybus cost $5 each for the first two bags, while there is a $10-per-person fee for priority boarding.

The morning’s flight is expected to reach Richmond at 10:15 a.m. there, Richmond is in the central part of Virgina, and about 70 miles from the beaches.

More than 200,000 tickets have been sold for Skybus flights since they went on sale at 6 a.m. on January 2.

The airline offers eight nonstop destinations from Port Columbus: Los Angeles, via Burbank, Calif.; San Diego, ; Kansas City, Mo.; Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Richmond, Va.; the Boston market, via Portsmouth, N.H.;, via Bellingham, Wash.; and Greensboro/Winston-Salem, N.C. ST. Augustine, Fla.

The new French virtual airline La France is soon ready for launch.
The airline, which is set up by a group from the now defunct flyScandinavia will launch flights from Paris Charles de Gaulle to Munich, Vienna, Stockholm Arlanda and Lisbon sometime in March.

Using a fleet of two Boeing 767-300ER’s powered with General Electric engines, the airline expects to become a serious player at routes between Paris and Stockholm. The aircraft will be fitted with a two class interior with 25 business and 188 economy seats.

All flights will depart from Terminal 1 at CDG and the airline will use Terminal 2 at Munich, Terminal 5 at Stockholm and Terminal 1 at Lisbon.

Free WLAN
“All passengers will have their own personal tv screen with on demand entertainment system and live TV, ” says CEO Joakim Holmstrom Zenk. “All passengers get a free three dish meal, cold in economy and hot in bussines.”
“[There is also] free WLAN for bussines class passengers, ” he added.

Competing with Air France
”We have seen a problem with that Air France is the only airline in France, so we will start to compete with them on low risk routes, so we will be guaranteed a profit for the whole of 2009” Mr Holmstrom Zenk said.

After months of preparatory work, the new Eurobelgian Holding has started operations today.

Flanders Airlines, founded in 2006 has been asked to join the GlobalOne alliance. To meet with the targets of this alliance, the parent company of Flanders Airlines, the ACBA Group, has decided to reintegrate the airline inside a new holding.

The result of this decision can be found in the “Eurobelgian Holding”. The holding company will comprise two airlines: the existing, but changed Flanders Airlines and a new airline, named Eurobelgian Airlines.
Although both airlines are seen as two separated airlines, they will work under one AOC. This will result in one commercial website, one crew list and an extended cooperation. It can be seen as Flanders Airlines would be a franchise airline of Eurobelgian airlines with conservation of its own identity.

Eurobelgian Airlines will start operations from Brussels national Airport. Eurobelgian will operate European as well as intercontinental flights from its main hub.

Additionally some leisure flights from Brussels and Ostend to Mediterranean holiday destinations are performed.

The fleet compromises existing, second hand as well as new aircraft. We have acquired three ‘young’ Boeing 767-300ER and we have just received three new Airbus A319s. The rest of the fleet will be composed of ex-Flanders Airlines and ex-ACBA aircraft such as the Embraer 170, Airbus A320 and Airbus A321.

Eurobelgian wants to offer passengers from/to Belgium comfortable flights with the choice of low fare or flexibility, although a full inflight service will always be included. Furthermore Eurobelgian airlines wants to profile itself as the GlobalOne gateway to continental Europe with its high standard, legacy operations.

Flanders Airlines, reduced, will continue operating from its main hub Antwerp Airport. Reduced will especially mean, a reduced fleet, as part of it will go to Eurobelgian Airlines. The current ERJ135s and A318s were phased out and will be replaced by three Bombardier Q400s. The Q400s are expected next month. Two of them will come from Cerulean Airlines, the other one will come right from the factory.
Flanders Airlines wants to fulfil al the needs of the modern businessman: fast performances and competitive prices, although with all services included. The flight hours are adjusted for the daily travelling businessman, although Flanders Airlines also offers city trip deals during weekends.
Like Eurobelgian airlines, passengers will have the choice between low fare and flexibility.

The project has been under lock and key for a couple of weeks however, some information has been provided from an unknown senior staff member.

“Eskimo VA will model the real world operations of Alaska Airlines. At this point in time we have not publicly released a timetable for development.” stated the senior staff member. Eskimo VA is predicted to become a Seattle-based carrier that collectively serves more than 70 destinations in the Western U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

We will follow this airline closely and publish more news about this new airline as it comes available.
