Madeira Airport also known as Funchal Airport is an international airport in the civil parish of Santa Cruz, in the Portuguese archipelago of Madeira. The airport is located 13.2 km east-northeast of the regional capital Funchal after which it is sometimes informally named. It mostly hosts flights to European metropolitan destinations due to the importance of Madeira as a leisure destination. It is the fourth busiest airport in Portugal.

It’s a New Year, and like passed years, we are returning to an old favorite of all our pilots. As we leave the winter weather and head for Saint Maarten.

The Airport is largely seasonal, with the greatest number of scheduled flights operating during the winter months. Mark Richards is Chairman of VATSIM’s Executive Committee which comprises of 5 other Regional members from across the globe.  The VATSIM Executive Committee (EC) is responsible for the operations of the VATSIM Network virtual airspace around the world.

Mark has been a member of VATSIM, and its predecessor SATCO, since 1996, joining in the very early days. He was one of the Founders of SATPAC (later VATPAC), the Australian and Pacific Division and was the first Division Director of the Division and with other founders, set about establishing SATCO in this part of the world. In the same year, he was appointed as a Network Supervisor and have been continually undertaking this role ever since.

In the fall of 1996, Microsoft released Flight Simulator for Windows 95 (FS6), the first windows based version of Microsoft Flight Simulator. Although this was more or less just a port from the DOS version (FS5.1) released just a year earlier, it did feature vastly improved frame-rates, better haze as well as additional aircraft, including the Extra 300 aerobatic aircraft. It also featured more 3-D detailing. This could be noticed in many places such as Manhattan and Meigs Field. This version was the first to also include major airports outside the US and Europe, which put Canadian airports (11 of them) in the simulator for the first time.

This month we are going to pay tribute to that lost flight simulator, which helped get it all started some 19 years ago. Departing from Toronto (CYYZ), it would be fitting to visit the default airport of Flight Simulator for Windows 95 Meigs Field (KCGX). However sadly due to political reasons at the time using the tragic events of September 11, 2001 to back up his actions, on the night of Sunday March 30, 2003, Mayor Daley ordered city crews to destroy the runway in the middle of the night, bulldozing large X-shaped gouges into the runway surface.
