The Hawaii Express purchases DC-3′s for sightseeing

Radial engine sounds once again filled the air above Honolulu this week as a flight of Douglas DC-3′s passed over Hickam Airfield on their way to John Rogers Airport.

The Hawaii Express has purchased three World War Two vintage Douglas transports to provide sightseeing tours over Oahu, Maui and the Big Island of Hawaii. Some of the aircraft will also provide point-to-point transportation on excursion tours.

“The aircraft are now being tested in the varying weather conditions of Hawaii, pilots are getting used to real seat of the pants flying using a minimum of navigational aids ” a company spokesperson said.

The aircraft have been seen performing formation flying and take offs that are a reminder of activity from more than 65 years ago. Crowds line the fence at John Rogers airport near Honolulu to watch the aircraft and listen to the large radial engines and see the lumbering transports take to the air. Many of the spectators lived in the area during the war and commented on seeing the aircraft active in the skies over Honolulu.

The sightseeing service is expected to begin on October 1st.
