Today Delta Virtual Airlines announced a pioneering breakthrough in the graphical display of meteorological data. This week, the airline integrated a “future radar” product into all aspects of its industry-leading ACARS infrastructure. Now, Delta Virtual (and Air France Virtual) pilots, web site visitors and dispatchers can see projected radar imagery for the continental United States in 15 minute increments up to six hours in the future.
“Experienced pilots understand that weather is the one of the most challenging aspects of aviation, that can turn a sedate flight into a terrifying experience. For inter-continental flights, weather patterns influence flight routing and fuel burn, ” a spokesperson told reporters.
“Because of this, Delta Virtual and Air France Virtual have become industry leaders in making the latest weather data available to our pilots and dispatchers,” he added.
The airline is also updating its pilot reporting and flight management software, called Dispatch. Future version includes auto-dispatch, giving pilots access to the same route database and fuel planner as dispatchers even when dispatch services are offline.
