Summer is here. For those of us in the south, we have been enjoying the warm weather for a few weeks now. Cottages are open, boats are in the water, and motorcycles are filling the road ways. However, the day still ends sometime between 8:30 & 9:00pm when the sun finally sets below the horizon.
This isn’t the case for everyone. Canada’s Northern Territories and Alaska, the first day of summer is the peak of all day sunlight as the sun never sets in some places. Wouldn’t it be great to go golfing at 1:00am with the sun still high in the sky?
This month we celebrate the peak of 24 hour sunlight in the north with a trip to Ketchikan Alaska on the Summer Solstice

This month, we begin our Dangerous Approaches tour. These next few events will take you on some of the most dangerous approaches and airports in the world. These events will become part of a new tour later on this year.
Our first stop will be Toronto’s Billy Bishop City Centre Airport, following a real world flight of Porter Airlines. One may not see Toronto City Centre as a dangerous airport. However, when you realize its approach path takes you into and then below one of the busiest airspaces in Canada. Toronto City Center is located on an island next to the downtown core of Canada’s largest city. Land long on this runway and you’re going to get more than your feet wet.
So load up the Canadian Xpress® Bombardier Dash 8-Q400 which is available to Continue reading
Platinum Airways, the very virtual Open Skies airline, is visiting four airports that are focus cities or hubs for low-cost airlines. The Budget Destination of the Week series takes pilots to Schönefeld, Fort Lauderdale, Tan Son Nhat International and William P Hobby Airports.
Platinum Airways’ June theme of Destination of the Week is all about budget airlines and their hubs and/or focus airports. The series starts at Schönefeld Airport (EDDB), still Berlin’s secondary airport that focuses on low-cost airlines such as easyJet and Ryanair. The second budget DOTW is Fort Lauderdale (KFLL), the largest base for Spirit Airlines and JetBlue. Budget airport #3 is Tan Son Nhat International (VTTS) near Ho Chi Minh (formerly Saigon), a hub for Jetstar Pacific and VietJet. We conclude Budget with a visit to William P Hobby Airport (KHOU) near Houston, TX, focus city for Southwest.
As usual, DOTW offers charts to be downloaded and links to scenery files. A selection of YouTube videos usually contains flight deck and ground views with landings and departures.
About Platinum Airways:
Keen to deliver on its mission to keep the fun in the hobby, Platinum Airways is Continue reading

As a flight simmer, you’ve probably tried your hand at flying all sorts of aircraft. Try your hand at this scenario: landing a heavy C-5 or C-17 in the harsh weather of the Poles as you touch down on an all-ice runway in McMurdo Station.
Or perhaps you prefer SPEED. As a virtual airman in vUSAF’s Air Combat Command, you’ll spend a lot of your time in excess of Mach 1 .
With the recent development of the ACMI gauge, a completely free utility available to all vUSAF airmen, the line between reality and fantasy blurs even further. All missile-equipped fighters come with two wing-loads full of armament, making the fight extend BVR (beyond visual range). If your missile misses, you’ll always have your guns…at least until you run out of ammo and the ACMI gauge gives you that heart-stalling click of an empty magazine. Popping flares and chaff as you race to land at the nearest Air Force base, decked out with completely free payware-quality scenery, you somehow manage to evade the enemy and land among frame rate-friendly models of your brothers and sisters in arms.
With major events each year, including a simulated Red Flag, a myriad of smaller deployments and wing training events, an active community of military-style pilots, and an administrative staff who are there to Continue reading
