Platinum Airways will be flying the jet set to its favourite ski resorts over the next four weeks. Private Delights, the Open Skies virtual airline’s next Destination of the Week series, will visit four smaller airports in ski country in the Alps and the Rocky Mountains.
Platinum Airways’ 2012 ski season DOTW theme differs strongly from last year’s Conquest of the Snowy Mountains, which visited the larger airports servicing popular ski resorts. This year, Private Delights is flying VIPs to their exclusive getaways in the snow. The series starts off with France’s Courchevel Airport (LFLJ), an extremely short and steeply sloped airfield of James Bond fame that can only accommodate smaller propeller planes. The other European Private Delight is Switzerland’s Lugano Airport (LSZA), very challenging with its 6.6 degrees approach – more than double the normal 3 degrees approach angle. In North America, both our Private Delight destinations are nestled in valleys in the Rocky Mountains. Glenwood Springs (KGWS) and Golden (CYGE) can be quite treacherous and are bound to provide a real test to pilots. This series is not Continue reading

Faced with a difficult decision regarding its fleet, after a week of extensive testing Air Fresno has decided that the Airbus A318, as well as other variants, suit their service requirements. “The stickler was the approaches into both South Lake Tahoe and Santa Barbara where terrain and noise were issues. There simply was no other choice available for the steep approaches and departures at these two locations than the A318 with it’s Steep Approach Mode and Fly By Wire.” The airline immediately secured a lease for one A318 with the enhanced capabilities while placing an order for purchase for one from Airbus for expedited delivery. Air Fresno is also acquiring one A319, two A320′s and one A321, with the A319 arriving by mid-January. As each new variant arrives Air Fresno will expand it’s routes for that model. “Investment in these aircraft is going to be substantial, we wanted to make sure the choice we make today is going to still be the right one at the end of 2012″. Cost for the five planned aircraft is estimated at $305 million, with the last aircraft set to arrive my the end of March. Air Fresno’s new aircraft and revised familiar livery can be seen at www.airfresno.com.
Canadian Xpress® would like to invite all pilots to join us on Saturday January 21st, 2012 at 19h00est (24h00z) for our January Monthly Fly-In where it is time to dust off your favorite piston pounder as this month we go back to January 1944 and fly the route of Major Greg ‘Pappy’ Boyington’s Marine Squadron VMF214 over Rabaul. This where he shot down his 26th enemy plane, and later was himself shot down.
As Vella la Vella which is the home base of the Blacksheep does not exist in Flight Simulator, we will be departing from the next closest island Gizo (AGGN) and fly over Bougainville Island and land at Buka (AYBK) and then continue on north east flying the airport of Tokua to the north side of the bay and the city of Rabaul, where Pappy was shot down. We will then turn back and end our journey at Tokua (AYTK).
This is an open invitation to all pilots no matter what your flying experience to attend this Continue reading
